66Today (20-06-2010), while finding new topic to write an article, I faced with the word Xerostomia which attracted my attention and forced me to do research on it, I googled it and found this information (may be helpful to those who just ignore such symptoms):
Xerostomia - It can be referred to a condition of dry mouth when your mouth lacks flow of saliva, there is an increment in drinking Water. In these condition people often feel dificulty in eating, tasting, swallowing, speaking (nearly have effect in most of the activities done by your mouth).
Xerostomia mostly occurs in smokers, old age peoples and is not actually a disease but an kind of symptom for serious diseases such as diabetes, Sjogren syndrome, anemia etc. its main causes are alcoholic beverages,drugs (medicines), nutritional deficiencies, stress, depression etc.
If you feel dryness with the medicines, then you should immediately consult your doctor for prescribing an drug that cause less dryness. The time period of Xerostomia can be shortened by taking proper medical help to get free from dehydration, illness.
Treatment of Xerostomia depends on the severity of this disease. Artificial saliva can be obtained from medical counters in the form of spray or gel. Doctor may provide you a drug that cause more saliva to remove dryness and dehydration.
What you can do yourself:
- Drink water regularly to keep your mouth free from dryness,
- Try sugarless items,
- Avoid dry foods,
- Avoid alcoholic beverages which increases water loss by frequent urination,
- use soft toothbrush and moisturizer for lips,
